How To Adjust Motorcycle Chain On Side Stand

May 21, 2024

Here are some steps for adjusting a motorcycle chain on the side stand:
Remove the shock
Move the wheel
Identify the tightest point in the chain
Adjust the chain so there's about 1/2 inch of slack at the tightest point
Put it back together
Park it on the side stand
Measure the slack

You can adjust the chain tension by moving the rear wheel backwards to tighten, or forwards to loosen. This is done by tightening or loosening adjustor locknuts, which are located on each side of the rear wheel.

You can also adjust the chain without a stand by loosening the adjustment nuts on both sides of the motorcycle, then pulling the back tire backwards to make the chain more tight.

Chain slack measurements can vary widely from the 30 millimeter range to the 60 millimeter range depending on the bike's design. For example, a traditional sport bike is usually closer to 30 millimeters, while a hyper strata asks for a chain slack measurement between 59. and 61 millimeters.
